Silver October began their work as a musician by producing electronic mixtape oddities and deep-cuts, the most notable of which being the "Paper Crane" mixtape in which S/O first began mixing live improvisation with electronic music. They would later make a debut on streaming platforms with the hardcore single "Painstar", and shortly after that went on to preform their live debut at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art.
