Nautical William were formed in 1987, based around the song writing partnership of Damian Dingley and Jim Cemlyn-Jones. With Dave Oliver, drums, Pete Bray, bass and Bob Conga, percussion, the band established roots in Bristol, UK, playing at hallowed venues such as The Tropic, Stokes Croft, Thekla on the Bristol docks and Moles club, Bath.
