The four young men of Miroslav met in college under mundane circumstances. Guitar-playing art student and indie rocker Adam knew Dave, a guitar-playing engineering student with a Brit-pop fetish. Adam also knew Nate, another art kid who, at the time, was into ska, and who played bass. Dave roomed with Deryck, a Metallica fan and percussionist of the Latin persuasion. The four practiced in the basement of a pre-school, encouraged by the fact that they were never booted out (they didn’t exactly have permission to be there).
