Hal David (May 25, 1921 – September 1, 2012) was a lyricist and songwriter who is perhaps best known for his decades-long partnership with composer, musical arranger, and fellow songwriter Burt Bacharach. Perhaps their best-known collaboration is the Oscar-winning single "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" (1969), written for the film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." Three of their songs have also been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame including two songs written for Dionne Warwick, "Don't Make Me Over" (1962) and "Walk on By (1963), and one written for the Carpenters, "(They Long to be) Close to You" (1970). Throughout his career, David won several of the most prestigious industry awards including an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1972), election to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1984), honorary degrees from Lincoln College, Illinois (1991) and Claremont Graduate University (2000), and a Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song with Bacharach (2012).
