Grandson of a Portuguese poet, singer and guitarist Dan Sena started Give Until Gone with bassist Jim Schwartz in 1997. Guitarist Jamie Cechin and drummer Jason Welsher joined and the band recorded their debut EP, only to be told by their label that there was no money for a CD version. Impressed by Give Until Gone's heart-wrenching tunes sung over crunching guitars, California label Dim Mak stepped in and signed the band. After Whatever Works was released, Keith Divel (Stickfigurecarousel) came in as the new second guitarist.
