De Paladijns werden in 1964 opgericht door Francis de Backer, Francois de Laat en Ludo Verhulst. De formatie heette aanvankelijk Paladijn, een ridder die voor zijn idealen vocht. Francois zag deze naam ooit op een sigarendoosje staan. In 1968 kwamen er twee dames bij: Anita en Mariska van Loon.
